My daughter is 15 months old, and can talk, feed herself, walk all over, says "No" and is EXTREMELY independant. She has to brush her own teeth, and needs to have some control in her daily doings. She has sat on the potty all by herself clothed, but I have never even tried to get her to "go" there yet.
My sweetie says it's too soon, and I have another friend who knows a woman who's son was trained by 1 year. (That seems extreme to me, but this is my first time around this block..as it were).
Any suggestions? Other signs I should look for? I should mention, we both work full-time, long hours, so our home time is quite precious and I don't want to spend it argueing with her or him over what time and how often she should be going to the bathroom like a big girl, but at the same time, I don't want her to wait too long either.
Thanks for any input!

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 12:02 PMMy friends daugther started going diaper free at 11 months, and was totally potty trained (or squat outdoors trained) by 17 months. They just taught her to say "ahhhhhhhhh" (as in, what a relief sound) whenever she needed to go, and it worked wonders. She only went in the floor a few times. I've heard very highly of this method. My son began showing interest in potty training around 2 yrs. Every child is different. Trust your mommy intuition. -

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 12:26 PMI think when they spend alot of time outdoors it can start at any time..and its natural to not have to make them...my girl started outside and just took it on to inside but would always want to outside even now at 6...

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 8:09 PMno way is that too soon! My 1st was potty trained at 14 months, the second at 11 months- my daughter is the slow poke it seems!
Google elimination communication and early potty training to get started- I'd love to help if you have specific questions (either here in the forums or if you pm me)
Good luck! -

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 4:52 PMThank you very much everyone. Wow! 11 months! How on earth did you do that? She wasn't even fully walking at 11 months!
I am going to start this week. Sadly, outside is NOT an option, it has been -39 Celsius here (don't know what that is Farenheit, but, it is bloody cold!) but this summer that would be great! I will definately be teaching her how to properly eliminate in the wilds! We live close(ish) to nature here, so that should be easy.
Wish me luck! Will definately be reporting often! -

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 4:42 AMYou can do diaper free in the house as well. That's how my friends started. (Vt is pretty darn cold too) There will be some accidents, but that's to be expected. The floor is no harder to clean than a cloth diaper! -

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 11:57 AMWith my first son we started around 15 months. we placed potties all over the house so he could reach them quickly. It was really just for fun to start and often he was naked so it was easy for him tO catch on.My second son started early too, his birthday is in June so he spent alot of time outside with no pants... my third son is 15 months now and doesn't get much nako time but says peepee and pooppoo.. I just often say the words when i am going or if anyone else in in bathroom. He loves little chairs and I think he will love potty once I find one for him. Making sounds works well and I think they really get a kick out of it. Best wishes and just enjoy the moments. what ever works. -

Mon, January 28, 2008 - 6:16 PMI have been working with my son for awhile now. He is 2yrs and 11months, he enjoys sitting on the potty but nothing happening yet. The important thing is to not stress. It will come when it comes.....I guess

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 6:54 AM"11 months! How on earth did you do that?"
he started crawling to the bathroom door and pounding on it- definitely knew what he wanted, that one!
"The floor is no harder to clean than a cloth diaper!"
maybe on hardwood or tile, but not carpet. cloth diapers are pretty darn easy to clean.
Regarding cold- we moved into a new house before my daughter was born. When she started potty training, she suddenly had a period when she wouldn't even go near the potty. Well, after 2 weeks, I realized- hmm, it's 40 below at our house. The bathroom is kind of cold. hmmm. Moved the potty next to the heater, suddenly it is THE place to be! now at 2 years, we are again having the regression- time to move the potty again (you'd think I'd learn!) -

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 3:05 PMI think you have to let the baby tell when she is ready and it sounds like she is ready. My oldest, now 23, was completely trained by 2 1/2, my #2 was done by 2 and my youngest trained herself and was day and night dry by the time she was 20 months. Mind you I had to do very little to have any of my girls go potty. I know my girls are older than what your sweet one is, but I let them tell me when they where ready to get out of the diapers. They were all day and night dry within a week, no night time diaper, no pull ups ( ok no pull up for the 23 yo back then.)
Goog luck and listen to her, let her tell when she is ready. -

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 11:20 AMThanks again everyone!
She just started to sit on it, clothed, and she is interested when I am on the "big potty", but this week she got really sick so I will have to postpone for a while. I think though, that she will be ready. We are going to try to have another baby, and I know pushing her to be trained before she's ready will only backfire, but my dream is that she is fully trained before the next baby comes along. As I am not yet pregnant, I think (hope) I have time for this. Wish me luck!
Cheers!! -

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Sun, February 3, 2008 - 1:09 PMMy girls were a little past i year when they started. I never really thought of it as training tho, more like allowing. They were interested in what I was doing on the potty and would show them and talk about it. They had a little potty in the bathroom and would sit on it when they wanted. We also had a house with wood floors and my girls often went about nakey-bird so were very aware of when pottying occurred. I also think cloth diapers are helpful in this respect as it is very obvious when it is wet as opposed to disposables that wick moisture away from the skin. They did not like having a wet diaper or worse yet a poopy diaper. I think the most important thing about potty training whenever you decide to do it is to not let it become a control issue. I never scolded my kids when they had an accident. I just cleaned it up and did not make a thing of it. We did do a little cheer however when they went in the potty and had a little potty song. -

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Sun, February 3, 2008 - 2:41 PMOH yeah, we did the potty dance when ever she did potty in the potty. You know the cabbage patch arms with, baby went potty in the potty! baby went potty in the potty! She loved it. Think six foot tall man doing that right next to 5 foot tall mommy. LOL Throw in a few sister when they were home and she got a show every time! -

Re: Is 15 months too soon to start toilet training?
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 11:22 AMSo, it's been a month, and she is not into it at all! She likes to sit on it (with the lid closed) to brush her teeth, but that's it. I bought the squisiest softest seat that was available and she is still not a fan of a seat with a hole in it...oh well...at least she plays with it. I am going to follow the "allowing" route one of the mamas here did. I think that will work better for her. Summer will eventually be here and she can go nakey-bird again! At least when I am not at work!
Thanks for all the tips ladies!
