Omega-3 for kids

topic posted Tue, April 1, 2008 - 8:57 AM by  kt
Is anyone giving supplements to their kids? My son is 3 and I want to start him on omega-3s (or essential fatty acids). I took DHA/EPA when I was preganant and nursing and want to continue now that he is of "supplement" age.

Thanks,
karen

I bolster my daughter's diet with foods rich in omega 3's. We eat a lot of meals with a variety of things included, like flax seed oils. The omega-3 alpha linoleic acids in seeds, nuts, whole grains and beans are as important to the body as the long chain fatty acids found in fish. Seeds, etc. are generally very high in omega 3's - and they contain vitamin E which is important to help the instability of the fatty acid chain once ingested - where they turn into long chains and are rapidly absorbed. Omega 3's break down pretty fast once they hit the oxygen in your body, and so that's where vitamin E comes in key. Feed a lot of leafy greens, etc.

I am a big proponent of using dietary modification to get maximum absorption of vitamins from food first, rather than supplements. If you want supplements, include vitamin E - maybe a nicely rounded children's vitamin. I believe you can incorporate suffient omega 3's into the diet without a specific supplement. i don't give my daughter extra supplements, but i was blessed with a happy eater and she isn't picky and wants to eat everything i do ;) adding a small amount of flax seed oil to your son's morning cereal or fruit smoothie will do wonders...good luck!

Thanks! I am vegan and he eats along with me. He just doesn't eat leafy greens and only some nuts (not like the amt I do). He does eat seeds (tahini) and grains and beans. I just didnt' know whether it was enough or not since he is 3 and is going thru his picky eater stage.

We like Udo's oil which is a blend a different oils (flax, sunflower, evening primrose, etc). We just add it to the food. I know you can buy one with DHA derived from seaweed.

try whole flax seed gound or blended into stuff, rather than flax seed oil...more stableand there's some evidence it is better utilized.(makes sense.)most children like a thick banana smoothie with a tablespoon of flax seeds ground into it. you can also make flax seed sprouts and putthemin sandwiches or blend them...lots of good enzymes etc.

true, true - we keep a bag of flax seeds around the house and add it into everything, even breads i make. the seeds include vitamins that help the absorption process - eating whole foods is a great thing :)

my favorite snack to give the kids is Ezekiel toast smeared with a layer of organic cold pressed flax oil, and organic peanut butter. They don't even know they are eating it.

I also sprinkle flax meal in homemade mac n cheese. They don't even know it's there.

I recommend the Nordic Naturals line of Omega 3s, especially the cod liver oil. As a country, Norway seems to have the highest regulation/standards for heavy metal filtration. Plus, you can get the oil & /or capsules in a semi-natural orange flavor. My son is 15 months old and he gets a teaspoon of it daily, usually mixed in with yogurt or fruit.

Sorry KT, I just re-read the thread and notice that you're vegan....so cod liver oil isn't gonna be your thing.

But, to any non-veg, non-vegans, I do recommend the cod liver oil....
