This is horrible! Although I am a big advocate of the public school system, I believe that every parent has the right to be able to teach their own children at home. Please read:

Re: Homeschooling setback in CA
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 11:27 AMWell, I don't know what happened to the interesting discussion that was here and seems to have disappeared, but I wanted to post a link to a really interesting perspective on public education. This is an excerpt from a book by John Taylor Gatto, a former teacher of the year in NYC who quit and wrote a book called 'The Underground History of American Education'. You can read the whole book at this same site. It's really, really worth reading, whether you intend to send your kid to school or not, it's worth thinking about the things he writes about.

PS. This doesn't have anything to do with the current homeschool challenge in CA, but it was relevant to the discussion that used to be here somewhere... -

Re: Homeschooling setback in CA
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 5:46 PMI know there was quite a response on the Attachment Parenting tribe, but I don't remember much of a response here, oddly enough. Maybe everyone's so aware (hehe...sorry, had to say it!) that they know about the buzz from homeschooling advocates all over CA and the US and that it doesn't sound like the law is going to pass...thank God!
The educational system in the US, at least in my opinion, has been in abismal shape for years. I went into public school in the 80s when it seemed like all the old teachers from the 60s and 70s were retiring or just getting "burnt out" or simply just didn't care anymore. I remember my 5th grade teacher specifically.....yeesh! No life in that man at ALL!
It's a matter of priorties for us as a country: education or war, c'mon!
There was also a good link to a homeschooling program out of VT that operates like a "distance learning" program. Oak Meadow School I think was the name. Here's the link:
